IronyIrony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. My cousin had a crush on this guy in high school and he wasn't really into brown skin girls, but what was so ironic was he was brown skin. The poem "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson was an ironic poem. What made the poem so ironic was how Richard Cory was talked about by people who knew him. He was known to be a handsome gentlemen with manners and respect. People around him seemed to be amazed by his personality, they spoke of him as if he were royalty. The tone of the poem was a happy tone it seemed Richard Cory was stress free. But in the end something was wrong with Richard Cory, because he committed suicide, "one calm summer night, went home and put a bullet through his head." The irony in he story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant was the couple spent ten years trying to replace a diamond necklace the wife borrowed from a friend and lost. The original necklace that was lost cost five hundred francs and the replacement necklace they spent ten years trying to replace was thirty six thousand francs.
